Chamyr Harris is charged with murder in the first degree in the death of her 4-year-old son, Somerset County First Assistant Prosecutor Annemarie Mueller, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr., and Franklin Township Public Safety Director Quovella Maeweather said. The boy's father, Sean Tate, a 36-year-old Woodbridge resident was arrested last week and also faces murder charges, authorities said.
Police responded to a hotel in Franklin Township at 3:24 p.m. for a report of an unresponsive child, authorities said. Tate told officers that his son had fallen off a toilet two days earlier, sustaining an injury, and had previously hit his head on an air conditioning unit, authorities said. Tate said he iced the injury before going to bed but woke up to find the child unresponsive, officials said. Harris, stated she last saw her child alive two hours earlier and reported to police about the toilet injury, authorities said.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. Medical personnel reported that the child appeared emaciated and had multiple injuries, authorities said.
An autopsy conducted by the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the boy’s death a homicide, authorities said.
Harris also faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.
